that’s $1400 pre tax for a midi keyboard with 2 screens that just controls NI software. Now I’m going to give everyone including NI the benefit of the doubt and just think that maybe this was a one-off bad production unit, but damn man. It actually felt like there was just styrofoam stuck under the keys or something to make it feel “weighted” but it was horribly heavy to push any key down, I felt resistance everywhere and it did not feel anything like any Hammer Action that I know of. My old M-Audio Keybed felt better than this thing. I put my hands down on the thing and it’s honestly got to be the worst keybed I’ve ever felt. So, with that in mind, I was ready to be blown away. Sitting a few keyboards over was the KK S88 MK2, I’ve also never played one of those so I went up to it and saw the whopping $1400+ (CAD) price tag on it but then I remembered hearing so many good things about it online when I was looking for a high end midi keyboard.

It was great, a really interesting piece of gear and I see why so many people love it. Today I was in the Music Store and they had a Nord Piano 5 sitting there, and personally I’ve never sat down and played one, so I did. But they are known for having less than desirable action, I did the best I could with that thing and it plays very smoothly now, but it still feels like a Rhodes. I recently got a 1973 Rhodes MK1, a beautiful instrument that I restored inside and out, it’s my baby. I ended up chosing the Novation 61SL MK3 in the end but anyways. I feel the NI could more instantly rewarding short term (with NI plugins/NKS), but more frustrating long term (more limited with non-NI stuff and hardware).Īlso, don't sleep on the Novation sequencer, because it is not only notes, it is similar to Circuit, it can sequence parameters and MIDI CC (and hence macros), recording realtime or "parameter-lock" style.Okay so let me give this some context, I’m not here to shit on NI, I actually like their products a lot, I use a Maschine now in my daily workflow and the S61 was a big contender for my main controller. Seems to me the Novation one can be the main controller of a whole studio (software and hardware), while NI's feels like it is mostly for NI software (which is not really that bad, since there is a LOT of cool NI and NKS stuff). The Novation one has better Live integration, and also with other MIDI hardware (it has MIDI mappings you can change realtime so MIDI CC fits the mapping of other hardware, and also CV out). The NI one seems great with NI's own stuff and NKS stuff, but average with the rest. With my own money I would get the Novation one, but gotta say, it is really close.įor pure Live integration it is definitely better, it's got sliders for 8 tracks with on/off and Arm buttons, with color LEDs helping show which track is being controlled.
